ਜਪੁਜੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ (Japji Sahib) — Transliteration and English Translation

Japji Sahib is a sacred composition by Guru Nanak Dev Ji (1469–1539), composed in the 16th century and placed at the very beginning of the Guru Granth Sahib (Angs 1–8); it contains the Mool Mantar, an opening slok, 38 pauris, and a concluding slok. Any translation or rendering of this bani is offered humbly and in obedience to Hukam, as a service to the divine Word rather than a personal creation.


Mūl Mantra

ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ॥ ਜਪੁ ॥ ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ॥੧॥

Īk oṅkār sat nām kartā purakh nirabhau nirvair akāl mūrat ajūnī saibhaṅ gur prasād || || jap || ād sach jugād sach hai bhī sach nānak hosī bhī sach ||1||

There is One Universal Creator. His Name is Truth. He is the Creator, without fear, without enmity. He is timeless, beyond birth, self-existent, realized by the Guru’s Grace.


ਪਉੜੀ ੧ (Paurī 1)

ਸੋਚੈ ਸੋਚਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸੋਚੀ ਲਖ ਵਾਰ॥
soce soc na hovai je socī lakh vār ||
By bathing, purity is not obtained, even if one bathes hundreds of thousands of times.

ਚੁਪੈ ਚੁਪ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਲਾਇ ਰਹਾ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰ॥
cupai cup na hovai je lāi rahā liv tār ||
By silence, one does not attain silence of the mind.

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੀ ਜੇ ਬੰਨਾ ਪੁਰੀਆ ਭਾਰ॥
bhukhiā bhukh na utrī je bannā purīā bhār ||
The hunger of desire is never satisfied, even by piling up loads of goods.

ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪਾ ਲਖ ਹੋਹਿ ਤ ਇਕ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਨਾਲਿ॥
sahas siāṇpā lakh hohi ta ik na calai nāl ||
Even with thousands of clever ideas, not one goes with the soul in the end.

ਕਿਵ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੋਈਐ ਕਿਵ ਕੂੜੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਪਾਲਿ॥
kiv saciārā hoīai kiv kūṛai ṭuṭai pāl ||
How can one become truthful? How can the wall of falsehood be broken?

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਚਲਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ॥ ੧॥
hukam rajāī calaṇā nānak likhiā nāl ||1||
By walking in harmony with Hukam—the Divine Will—as written within us.


ਪਉੜੀ ੨ (Paurī 2)

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਆਕਾਰ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਈ॥
hukmī hovan ākār hukam na kahiā jāī ||
By His Command, forms and beings are created; His Command cannot be fully described.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਜੀਅ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ॥
hukmī hovan jīa hukam milai vaḍiāī ||
By His Command, life comes into existence; by His Command, honor is bestowed.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਉਤਮੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ॥
hukmī utam nīc hukam likhi dukh sukh pāīah ||
By His Command, some are high and some are low; by His Command, pain and pleasure are written.

ਇਕਨਾ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਇਕਿ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਦਾ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ॥
iknā hukmī bakhasīs ik hukmī sadā bhavāīah ||
Through His Command, some are blessed with grace, while through His Command, some endlessly wander in delusion.

ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਹੁਕਮ ਨ ਕੋਇ॥
hukamai andar sabh ko bāhar hukam na koi ||
All are within His Command; outside of His Command there is none.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਜੇ ਬੁਝੈ ਤ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ॥ ੨॥
nānak hukamai je bujhai ta haumai kahe na koi ||2||
O Nanak, one who understands the Command no longer speaks in ego.


ਪਉੜੀ ੩ (Paurī 3)

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਤਾਣੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਸੈ ਤਾਣੁ॥
gāvai ko tāṇ hovai kisai tāṇ ||
Some sing of His Power—if only they possess strength.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਦਾਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ॥
gāvai ko dāt jāṇai nīsāṇ ||
Some sing of His Gifts—knowing Him as the Great Giver.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਗੁਣ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਚਾਰ॥
gāvai ko guṇ vaḍiāīā cār ||
Some sing of His Virtues, His infinite Excellences.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਵਿਖਮੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
gāvai ko vidiā vikhm vīcār ||
Some sing of His Knowledge—through subtle and difficult reflection.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਸਾਜਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਨੁ ਖੇਹ॥
gāvai ko sāj kare tan kheh ||
Some sing of Him who fashions the body and then reduces it to dust

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਜੀਅ ਲੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੇਹ॥
gāvai ko jīa lai phir deh ||
Some sing of Him who gives life and then takes it away.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਜਾਪੈ ਦਿਸੈ ਦੂਰਿ॥
gāvai ko jāpai disai dūr ||
Some sing of Him as distant, far away.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਵੇਖੈ ਹਾਦਰਾ ਹਦੂਰਿ॥
gāvai ko vekhai hādarā hadūr ||
Some sing of Him as near, ever-present.

ਕਥਨਾ ਕਥੀ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਤੋਟਿ॥
kathnā kathī na āvai ṭoṭ ||
Endless are the praises; they never reach an end.

ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਕਥੀ ਕੋਟੀ ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟਿ॥
kath kath kathī koṭī koṭ koṭ ||
Countless have sung, and countless continue to sing.

ਦੇਦਾ ਦੇ ਲੈਦੇ ਥਕਿ ਪਾਹਿ॥
dedā de laide thak pāh ||
He gives and gives; receivers tire of receiving.

ਜੁਗਾ ਜੁਗੰਤਰਿ ਖਾਹੀ ਖਾਹਿ॥
jugā jugaṅtar khāhī khāh ||
Through ages upon ages, beings consume what He bestows.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਚਲਾਏ ਰਾਹੁ॥
hukmī hukam calāe rāh ||
By His Command, the path of all is directed.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ॥ ੩॥
nānak vigasai veparvāh ||3||
Nanak: Carefree, detached, the Sovereign rejoices in His Creation.


ਪਉੜੀ ੪ (Paurī 4)

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਨਾਇ ਭਾਖਿਆ ਭਾਉ ਅਪਾਰੁ॥
sācā sāhib sāc nāe bhākhiā bhāu apār ||
The True Master is True, and True is His Name. He is described with infinite love.

ਆਖਹਿ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ॥
ākhah maṅgah deh deh dāt kare dātār ||
People speak and ask, “Give, give!” – and the Great Giver grants gifts.

ਫੇਰਿ ਕਿ ਅਗੈ ਰਖੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ॥
pher ki agai rakhīai jit disai darabār ||
But then what offering should we place before Him, so that we may behold His Court?

ਮੁਹੌ ਕਿ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ॥
muhau ki bolaṇ bolīai jit suṇ dhare piār ||
What words should we speak, so that hearing them, He may bestow His Love?

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
amrit velā sac nāu vaḍiāī vīcār ||
At the ambrosial hour of dawn, meditate on the True Name and reflect upon His greatness.

ਕਰਮੀ ਆਵੈ ਕਪੜਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਮੋਖੁ ਦੁਆਰੁ॥
karmī āvai kapaṛā nadarī mokh duār ||
By actions, the robe of the body is obtained; by His grace, the door of liberation is found.

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ॥ ੪॥
nānak evai jāṇīai sabh āpe saciār ||4||
O Nanak, know this well: the True One Himself pervades all.


ਪਉੜੀ ੫ (Paurī 5)

ਥਾਪਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਕੀਤਾ ਨ ਹੋਇ॥
thāpiā na jāi kītā na hoi ||
He cannot be fixed in place; He cannot be made by any act.

ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ॥
āpe āp nirañjan soi ||
He Himself is immaculate and free from stain.

ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਾਨੁ॥
jin seviā tin pāiā mān ||
Those who have served Him have attained honour.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗਾਵੀਐ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ॥
nānak gāvīai guṇī nidhān ||
O Nanak, sing (of) the treasure of virtues.

ਗਾਵੀਐ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਭਾਉ॥
gāvīai suṇīai man rakhīai bhāu ||
Sing, listen, and hold love in your heart.

ਦੁਖੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਘਰਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ॥
dukh parhar sukh ghar lai jāi ||
Suffering is dispelled; joy comes to the home (the heart).

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਦੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਦੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ॥
gurmukh nādaṅ gurmukh vedaṅ gurmukh rahiā samāī ||
The Gurmukh is the sound-current; the Gurmukh is the Vedic wisdom; the Gurmukh abides in (or is absorbed into) the Divine.

ਗੁਰੁ ਈਸਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੋਰਖੁ ਬਰਮਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬਤੀ ਮਾਈ॥
guru īsar guru gorakh barmā guru pārbatī māī ||
Guru is Lord (Īsar), Guru is Gorakh, Brahma, Guru is Mother Parvati.

ਜੇ ਹਉ ਜਾਣਾ ਆਖਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਥਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ॥
je hau jāṇā ākhā nāhī kahanā kathan na jāī ||
Even if I know Him, I cannot speak of Him; speech and description cannot encompass Him.

ਗੁਰਾ ਇਕ ਦੇਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ॥
gurā ik dehi bujhāī ||
The Guru has imparted one understanding.

ਸਭਨਾ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੋ ਮੈ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ॥ ੫॥
sabhnā jīā kā ik dātā so mai visar na jāī ||5||
The One who gives to all beings — may I not forget Him.


ਪਉੜੀ ੬ (Paurī 6)

ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਾ ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਾਣੇ ਕਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਰੀ॥
tīrath nāvā je tis bhāvā viṇ bhāṇe ki nāe karī ||
If pilgrimage and ritual please Him, then they are worthwhile; without His Will, what good are they?

ਜੇਤੀ ਸਿਰਠਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਵੇਖਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਲਈ॥
jetī siraṭh upāī vekhā viṇ karmā ki milai laī ||
As far as I survey the whole of creation, without actions (karma) nothing is obtained.

ਮਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਤਨ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਮਾਣਿਕ ਜੇ ਇਕ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਿਖ ਸੁਣੀ॥
mat vic ratan javāhar māṇik je ik gur kī sikh suṇī ||
Within the mind are jewels, gems, and pearls — if one listens to the single teaching of the Guru.

ਗੁਰਾ ਇਕ ਦੇਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ॥
gurā ik dehi bujhāī ||
The Guru grants one illuminating understanding.

ਸਭਨਾ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੋ ਮੈ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ॥ ੬॥
sabhnā jīā kā ik dātā so mai visar na jāī ||6||
That there is one Giver of all life — may I never forget Him.


ਪਉੜੀ ੭ (Paurī 7)

ਜੇ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਆਰਜਾ ਹੋਰ ਦਸੂਣੀ ਹੋਇ॥
je jug cāre ārjā hor dasūṇī hoi ||
Even if one’s lifespan were equal to the four ages (yugas), and even ten times longer,

ਨਵਾ ਖੰਡਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਨਾਲਿ ਚਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ॥
navā khaṇḍā vic jāṇīai nāl calai sabh koi ||
And if one’s fame spreads across the nine continents, with everyone following him,

ਚੰਗਾ ਨਾਉ ਰਖਾਇ ਕੈ ਜਸੁ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਜਗਿ ਲੇਇ॥
caṅgā nāu rakhāi kai jas kīrat jag lei ||
And if one earns a great name, and his glory is sung by the world,

ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਤ ਵਾਤ ਨ ਪੁਛੈ ਕੇ॥
je tis nadar na āvaī ta vāt na puchai ke ||
Yet, if he does not receive the Divine Glance of Grace, then none of it matters; no one will ask about him.

ਕੀਟਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੀਟੁ ਕਰਿ ਦੋਸੀ ਦੋਸੁ ਧਰੇ॥
kīṭā andar kīṭ kar dosī dos dhare ||
He is counted as a worm among worms, condemned and blamed.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਗੁਣਿ ਗੁਣੁ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਣਵੰਤਿਆ ਗੁਣੁ ਦੇ॥
nānak nirguṇ guṇ kare guṇvaṅtiā guṇ de ||
O Nanak, the Virtuous One bestows virtues upon the unworthy, and gives even more virtues to the virtuous.

ਤੇਹਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਜਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਣੁ ਕੋਇ ਕਰੇ॥ ੭॥
tehā koi na sujhaī ji tis guṇ koi kare ||7||
There is no one else like Him; none other can bestow such virtues.


ਪਉੜੀ ੮ (Paurī 8)

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਾਥ॥
suṇiai sidh pīr sur nāth ||
By listening, one becomes like the Siddhas, the saints, the spiritual teachers, and the masters.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਧਰਤਿ ਧਵਲ ਆਕਾਸ॥
suṇiai dharat dhaval ākās ||
By listening, one perceives the Earth, its support, and the sky – the vast scope of creation.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਦੀਪ ਲੋਅ ਪਾਤਾਲ॥
suṇiai dīp loa pātāl ||
By listening, one knows the realms of Light, the lands above, the regions below.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਪੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕਾਲੁ॥
suṇiai poh na sakai kāl ||
By listening, even Death (Kāl) cannot reach; one transcends fear of mortality.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਗਾਸੁ॥
nānak bhagtā sadā vigās ||
O Nanak, the devotees dwell in everlasting joy.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਪ ਕਾ ਨਾਸੁ॥ ੮॥
suṇiai dūkh pāp kā nās ||8||
By listening, pain and sin are destroyed.


ਪਉੜੀ ੯ (Paurī 9)

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਈਸਰੁ ਬਰਮਾ ਇੰਦੁ॥
suṇiai īsar barmā indu ||
Listening, one attains the wisdom of Shiva (Īsar), Brahma, and Indra.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਲਾਹਣ ਮੰਦੁ॥
suṇiai mukh sālāhaṇ mand ||
Listening, even the lowly and slanderous tongues begin to praise the Divine.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਤਨਿ ਭੇਦ॥
suṇiai jog jugat tan bhed ||
Listening, one understands the method of yoga and the secrets of the body.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਵੇਦ॥
suṇiai sāst simrit ved ||
Listening, one comprehends the scriptures, Simritis, and the Vedas.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਗਾਸੁ॥
nānak bhagtā sadā vigās ||
O Nanak, the devotees are forever in bliss.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਪ ਕਾ ਨਾਸੁ॥ ੯॥
suṇiai dūkh pāp kā nās ||9||
Listening, pain and sin are destroyed.


ਪਉੜੀ ੧੦ (Paurī 10)

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ॥
suṇiai sat santoḳh giān ||
By listening, one attains truth, contentment, and wisdom.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਕਾ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ॥
suṇiai aṭhasaṭh kā isnān ||
By listening, it is as if one has bathed at the sixty-eight sacred places of pilgrimage.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ॥
suṇiai paṛ paṛ pāvah mān ||
By listening, one receives the honor that comes from reading and studying endlessly.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ॥
suṇiai lāgai sahaj dhiān ||
By listening, one’s mind naturally rests in deep meditation and equipoise.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਗਾਸੁ॥
nānak bhagtā sadā vigās ||
O Nanak, the devotees are forever in bliss.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਪ ਕਾ ਨਾਸੁ॥ ੧੦॥
suṇiai dūkh pāp kā nās ||10||
By listening, suffering and sins are erased.


ਪਉੜੀ ੧੧ (Paurī 11)

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਰਾ ਗੁਣਾ ਕੇ ਗਾਹ॥
suṇiai sarā guṇā ke gāh ||
By listening, one becomes the singer of all virtues.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸੇਖ ਪੀਰ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ॥
suṇiai sekh pīr pātisāh ||
By listening, one becomes as wise as leaders, saints, and kings.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਅੰਧੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਰਾਹੁ॥
suṇiai andhe pāvah rāh ||
By listening, even the spiritually blind find the path.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਹਾਥ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਸਗਾਹੁ॥
suṇiai hāth hovai asagāh ||
By listening, one gains the grasp of the infinite, as though holding the vast oceans in hand.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਗਾਸੁ॥
nānak bhagtā sadā vigās ||
O Nanak, the devotees are forever in bliss.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਪ ਕਾ ਨਾਸੁ॥ ੧੧॥
suṇiai dūkh pāp kā nās ||11||
By listening, suffering and sins are erased.


ਪਉੜੀ ੧੨ (Paurī 12)

ਮੰਨੇ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ॥
manne kī gat kahī na jāi ||
The state of the faithful cannot be described.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ॥
je ko kahai pichai pachuṭāi ||
Whoever tries to describe it later regrets, for it cannot be fully expressed.

ਕਾਗਦਿ ਕਲਮ ਨ ਲਿਖਣਹਾਰੁ॥
kāgad kalam na likhaṇhār ||
No paper, pen, or writer can record its depth.

ਮੰਨੇ ਕਾ ਬਹਿ ਕਰਨਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
manne kā bah karan vīcār ||
Even if all writers sit together to describe the faithful, they cannot express it.

ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਹੋਇ॥
aisā nām nirañjan hoi ||
Such is the pure and stainless Name of the Lord.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਇ॥ ੧੨॥
je ko mann jāṇai man koi ||12||
Only that rare one who accepts it with faith can truly know it.


ਪਉੜੀ ੧੩ (Paurī 13)

ਮੰਨੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਬੁਧਿ॥
manne surat hovai man budh ||
By acceptance, awareness awakens in the mind and wisdom shines forth.

ਮੰਨੈ ਸਗਲ ਭਵਣ ਕੀ ਸੁਧਿ॥
manne sagal bhavaṇ kī sudh ||
By acceptance, one gains understanding of all realms of existence.

ਮੰਨੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਨਾ ਖਾਇ॥
manne muhi choṭā nā khāi ||
By acceptance, the face bears no scars of vices and corruption.

ਮੰਨੈ ਜਮ ਕੈ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ॥
manne jam kai sāth na jāi ||
By acceptance, one does not walk with the messenger of death.

ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਹੋਇ॥
aisā nām nirañjan hoi ||
Such is the pure, stainless Name of the Lord.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਇ॥ ੧੩॥
je ko mann jāṇai man koi ||13||
Only that rare one who accepts it with faith can truly know it.


ਪਉੜੀ ੧੪ (Paurī 14)

ਮੰਨੈ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਇ॥
manne mārag ṭhāk na pāi ||
By acceptance, obstacles and blockages do not hinder the seeker.

ਮੰਨੈ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਜਾਇ॥
manne pat siu pargaṭ jāi ||
By acceptance, one’s dignity is revealed and one departs with honor.

ਮੰਨੈ ਮਗੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਪੰਥੁ॥
manne mag na calai panth ||
By acceptance, one does not follow narrow sectarian ways.

ਮੰਨੈ ਧਰਮ ਸੇਤੀ ਸਨਬੰਧੁ॥
manne dharam setī sanbandh ||
By acceptance, one’s life connects with the true Dharma.

ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਹੋਇ॥
aisā nām nirañjan hoi ||
Such is the pure, stainless, unattached Name of the Lord.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਇ॥ ੧੪॥
je ko mann jāṇai man koi ||14||
Only the one who accepts in the heart can truly know this.


ਪਉੜੀ ੧੫ (Paurī 15)

ਮੰਨੈ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮੋਖੁ ਦੁਆਰੁ॥
manne pāvah mokh duār ||
By acceptance, one finds the gateway of liberation.

ਮੰਨੈ ਪਰਵਾਰੈ ਸਾਧਾਰੁ॥
manne paravārai sādhār ||
By acceptance, one becomes the support and refuge of the family.

ਮੰਨੈ ਤਰੈ ਤਾਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ॥
manne tarai tāre guru sikh ||
By acceptance, one crosses the world-ocean and helps others cross as well.

ਮੰਨੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਵਹਿ ਨ ਭਿਖ॥
manne nānak bhavah na bhikh ||
By acceptance, one does not wander in spiritual disguises or beg for sustenance.

ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਹੋਇ॥
aisā nām nirañjan hoi ||
Such is the pure, stainless, unattached Name of the Lord.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਇ॥ ੧੫॥
je ko mann jāṇai man koi ||15||
Only the one who accepts in the heart can truly know this.


ਪਉੜੀ ੧੬ (Paurī 16)

ਪੰਚ ਪਰਵਾਣ ਪੰਚ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ॥
pañc parvāṇ pañc pardhān ||
The five are accepted, the five are the chiefs.

ਪੰਚੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ॥
pañce pāvah dargahi mān ||
The five obtain honor in the Divine Court.

ਪੰਚੇ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਦਰਿ ਰਾਜਾਨੁ॥
pañce sohah dar rājān ||
The five are resplendent, even in assemblies of kings.

ਪੰਚਾ ਕਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ॥
pañcā kā guru eku dhiān ||
The focus of the five is one single Guru.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਕਰੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
je ko kahai karai vīcār ||
If one speaks and tries to deliberate on the Creator’s works,

ਕਰਤੇ ਕੈ ਕਰਣੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੁਮਾਰੁ॥
karte kai karaṇai nāhī sumār ||
The workings of the Creator are beyond all measure.

ਧੌਲੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਾ ਪੂਤੁ॥
dhaul dharam daiā kā pūt ||
The mythical bull supporting the earth is Dharma, born from compassion.

ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਥਾਪਿ ਰਖਿਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਸੂਤਿ॥
santokh thāp rakhiā jin sūt ||
It is sustained by contentment, upon which creation rests.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬੁਝੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ॥
je ko bujhai hovai saciār ||
Whoever realizes this becomes truthful.

ਧਵਲੈ ਉਪਰਿ ਕੇਤਾ ਭਾਰੁ॥
dhavlai upari ketā bhār ||
But how great is the weight upon this bull?

ਧਰਤੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਪਰੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਹੋਰੁ॥
dharatī hor parai hor hor ||
There are countless earths beyond this one.

ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਭਾਰੁ ਤਲੈ ਕਵਣੁ ਜੋਰੁ॥
tis te bhār talai kavaṇ jor ||
And beneath them, who has the power to hold their load?

ਜੀਅ ਜਾਤਿ ਰੰਗਾ ਕੇ ਨਾਵ॥
jīa jāt raṅgā ke nāv ||
So many beings, species, colors, and names.

ਸਭਨਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਵੁੜੀ ਕਲਾਮ॥
sabhnā likhiā vuṛī kalām ||
All have been inscribed by the Divine Pen.

ਏਹੁ ਲੇਖਾ ਲਿਖਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ॥
ehu lekhā likh jāṇai koi ||
If someone tries to record the account,

ਲੇਖਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕੇਤਾ ਹੋਇ॥
lekhā likhiā ketā hoi ||
How vast would that account be?

ਕੇਤਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਸੁਆਲਿਹੁ ਰੂਪੁ॥
ketā tāṇ suālihu rūp ||
How great is the power, how beautiful the forms.

ਕੇਤੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੌਣੁ ਕੂਤੁ॥
ketī dāt jāṇai kauṇ kūt ||
How many gifts—who has the ability to know?

ਕੀਤਾ ਪਸਾਉ ਏਕੋ ਕਵਾਉ॥
kītā pasāu eko kavāu ||
With one Word, the expansion was made.

ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਲਖ ਦਰੀਆਉ॥
tis te hoe lakh dariāu ||
From it came rivers in countless streams of life.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਵਣ ਕਹਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
kudarat kavaṇ kahā vīcār ||
How can I reflect on such a vast creation?

ਵਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ਏਕ ਵਾਰ॥
vāriā na jāvā ek vār ||
I cannot even sacrifice myself once.

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਕਾਰ॥
jo tuḍh bhāvai sāī bhalī kār ||
Whatever pleases You—that alone is good.

ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ॥ ੧੬॥
tū sadā salāmat niraṅkār ||16||
You are forever stable, O Formless One.


ਪਉੜੀ ੧੭ (Paurī 17)

ਅਸੰਖ ਜਪ ਅਸੰਖ ਭਾਉ॥
asaṅkh jap asaṅkh bhāu ||
Countless are the devotees who repeat His Name, countless are those who live in love.

ਅਸੰਖ ਪੂਜਾ ਅਸੰਖ ਤਪ ਤਾਉ॥
asaṅkh pūjā asaṅkh tap tāu ||
Countless are the forms of worship, countless are the disciplines and austerities.

ਅਸੰਖ ਗਰੰਥ ਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਦ ਪਾਠ॥
asaṅkh garanth mukh ved pāṭh ||
Countless are the scriptures, countless the recitations of the Vedas from countless lips.

ਅਸੰਖ ਜੋਗ ਮਨਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਉਦਾਸ॥
asaṅkh jog man rahah udās ||
Countless are the yogis who strive for union, countless the renunciates who remain detached.

ਅਸੰਖ ਭਗਤ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨ ਵੀਚਾਰ॥
asaṅkh bhagat guṇ giān vīcār ||
Countless are the devotees who reflect on the Divine virtues and wisdom.

ਅਸੰਖ ਸਤੀ ਅਸੰਖ ਦਾਤਾਰ॥
asaṅkh satī asaṅkh dātār ||
Countless are the truthful ones, countless the givers.

ਅਸੰਖ ਸੂਰ ਮੁਹ ਭਖ ਸਾਰ॥
asaṅkh sūr muh bhakh sār ||
Countless are the warriors who endure blows on their faces and still remain firm.

ਅਸੰਖ ਮੋਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ਤਾਰ॥
asaṅkh mon liv lāi tār ||
Countless are the silent ones who are absorbed in deep meditation.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਵਣ ਕਹਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
kudarat kavaṇ kahā vīcār ||
O Lord, how can I possibly describe the vastness of Your creation?

ਵਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ਏਕ ਵਾਰ॥
vāriā na jāvā ek vār ||
I cannot even offer myself as a sacrifice once.

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਕਾਰ॥
jo tuḍh bhāvai sāī bhalī kār ||
Whatever pleases You, that alone is the best deed.

ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ॥ ੧੭॥
tū sadā salāmat niraṅkār ||17||
You are forever stable and eternal, O Formless One. ||17||


ਪਉੜੀ ੧੮ (Paurī 18)

ਅਸੰਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧ ਘੋਰ॥
asaṅkh mūrakh andh ghor ||
Countless are the fools, lost in utter darkness.

ਅਸੰਖ ਚੋਰ ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ॥
asaṅkh cor harāmkhor ||
Countless are the thieves, countless those who live dishonestly on others’ earnings.

ਅਸੰਖ ਅਮਰ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਜੋਰ॥
asaṅkh amar kar jāhi jor ||
Countless are the tyrants who enforce their will by force.

ਅਸੰਖ ਗਲਵਢ ਹਤਿਆ ਕਮਾਹਿ॥
asaṅkh galvaḍ haṯiā kamāhi ||
Countless are those who cut throats and commit murders.

ਅਸੰਖ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ॥
asaṅkh pāpī pāp kar jāhi ||
Countless are sinners, continually committing sins.

ਅਸੰਖ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜੇ ਫਿਰਾਹਿ॥
asaṅkh kūṛiār kūṛe phirāhi ||
Countless are liars, who wander lost in falsehood.

ਅਸੰਖ ਮਲੇਛ ਮਲੁ ਭਖਿ ਖਾਹਿ॥
asaṅkh malechh mal bhakh khāhi ||
Countless are the impure, consuming what is filthy.

ਅਸੰਖ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਭਾਰੁ॥
asaṅkh nindak sir karah bhār ||
Countless are the slanderers, carrying heavy loads of their own slander.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
nānak nīc kahai vīcār ||
Nanak, the lowly, offers this reflection.

ਵਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ਏਕ ਵਾਰ॥
vāriā na jāvā ek vār ||
I cannot sacrifice myself even once.

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਕਾਰ॥
jo tuḍh bhāvai sāī bhalī kār ||
Whatever pleases You is the only true good.

ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ॥ ੧੮॥
tū sadā salāmat niraṅkār ||18||
You are forever stable and eternal, O Formless One. ||18||


ਪਉੜੀ ੧੯ (Paurī 19)

ਅਸੰਖ ਨਾਵ ਅਸੰਖ ਥਾਵ॥
asaṅkh nāv asaṅkh thāv ||
Countless are the names, countless are the places.

ਅਗੰਮ ਅਗੰਮ ਅਸੰਖ ਲੋਅ॥
agaṁm agaṁm asaṅkh loā ||
Unfathomable, beyond reach — countless are the worlds.

ਅਸੰਖ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਹੋਇ॥
asaṅkh kahah sir bhār hoi ||
To describe them all as countless still becomes a burden of exaggeration.

ਅਖਰੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਖਰੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ॥
akhri nām akhri sālāh ||
Through letters are His Names expressed; through letters is His praise sung.

ਅਖਰੀ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੀਤ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹ॥
akhri giān gīt guṇ gāh ||
Through letters is knowledge conveyed, through letters are virtues described in song.

ਅਖਰੀ ਲਿਖਣੁ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਬਾਣਿ॥
akhri likhaṇ bolaṇ bāṇ ||
Through letters is all writing and speech formed.

ਅਖਰਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਖਾਣਿ॥
akhra sir sanjog vakhāṇ ||
Through letters are unions formed and destinies declared.

ਜਿਨਿ ਏਹਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਨਾਹਿ॥
jin eh likhe tis sir nāh ||
But the One who has inscribed all this is Himself beyond letters.

ਜਿਵ ਫੁਰਮਾਏ ਤਿਵ ਤਿਵ ਪਾਹਿ॥
jiv phurmāe tiv tiv pāh ||
As He ordains, so do we receive.

ਜੇਤਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇਤਾ ਨਾਉ॥
jetā kītā tetā nāu ||
All that has been created reflects His Name.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਥਾਉ॥
viṇ nāvai nāhī ko thāu ||
Without His Name, no place exists.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਵਣ ਕਹਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
kudarat kavaṇ kahā vīcār ||
What power do I have to describe or contemplate His creation?

ਵਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ਏਕ ਵਾਰ॥
vāriā na jāvā ek vār ||
I cannot even once sacrifice myself fully to Him.

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਕਾਰ॥
jo tuḍh bhāvai sāī bhalī kār ||
Whatever pleases You, O Lord, that alone is the true and noble act.

ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ॥ ੧੯॥
tū sadā salāmat niraṅkār ||19||
You are eternal, ever stable, beyond form, O Formless One.


ਪਉੜੀ ੨੦ (Paurī 20)

ਭਰੀਐ ਹਥੁ ਪੈਰੁ ਤਨੁ ਦੇਹ॥
bhariā hath pair tan deh ||
When the hands, feet, and body are soiled with dirt,

ਪਾਣੀ ਧੋਤੈ ਉਤਰਸੁ ਖੇਹ॥
pāṇī dhotai utrās kheh ||
The dirt is washed away with water.

ਮੂਤ ਪਲੀਤੀ ਕਪੜੁ ਹੋਇ॥
mūt palītī kapaṛ hoi ||
If clothes are defiled with urine,

ਦੇ ਸਾਬੂਣੁ ਲਈਐ ਓਹੁ ਧੋਇ॥
de sābūṇ laīai oh dhoi ||
Soap is applied, and they are cleansed.

ਭਰੀਐ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਪਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ॥
bhariā mat pāpā kai sang ||
But when the mind is polluted with sin,

ਓਹੁ ਧੋਪੈ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ॥
ohu dhopai nāvai kai raṅg ||
It is cleansed only by the color of the Divine Name.

ਪੁੰਨੀ ਪਾਪੀ ਆਖਣੁ ਨਾਹਿ॥
puṇnī pāpī ākhaṇ nāh ||
No one can be declared virtuous or sinful merely by words.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਣਾ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਹੁ॥
kar kar karaṇā likh lai jāh ||
According to their deeds, each carries the record with them.

ਆਪੇ ਬੀਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖਾਹੁ॥
āpe bīj āpe hī khāh ||
Whatever one sows, that alone shall one eat.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਆਵਹੁ ਜਾਹੁ॥ ੨੦॥
nānak hukmī āvahu jāh ||20||
O Nānak, by His command do we come and go.


ਪਉੜੀ ੨੧ (Paurī 21)

ਤੀਰਥੁ ਤਪੁ ਦਇਆ ਦਤੁ ਦਾਨੁ॥
tīrath tap daiā dat dān ||
Pilgrimages, austerities, compassion, and charity—

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ ਤਿਲ ਕਾ ਮਾਨੁ॥
je ko pāvai til kā mān ||
Through them, one may receive only a tiny bit of honor.

ਸੁਣਿਆ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਭਾਉ॥
suṇiā manniā man kītā bhāu ||
Listening, accepting, and filling the heart with love—

ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਮਲਿ ਨਾਉ॥
antara gat tīrath mal nāu ||
That is the true inner cleansing, the inner pilgrimage.

ਸਭਿ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਮੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ॥
sabh guṇ tere mai nāhī koi ||
All virtues are Yours, O Lord; none belong to me.

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਣ ਕੀਤੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ॥
viṇ guṇ kīte bhagat na hoi ||
Without cultivating virtues, there can be no devotion.

ਸੁਅਸਤਿ ਆਥਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਬਰਮਾਉ॥
suasti āth bāṇī barmāu ||
Through the Word, blessings and peace are proclaimed.

ਸਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਣੁ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ॥
sat suhāṇ sadā man cāu ||
Truth is beautiful; it forever delights the mind.

ਕਵਣੁ ਸੁ ਵੇਲਾ ਵਖਤੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਕਵਣ ਥਿਤਿ ਕਵਣੁ ਵਾਰੁ॥
kavaṇ su velā vakhat kavaṇ kavaṇ thit kavaṇ vār ||
What was that time, that moment, that lunar date, that day—

ਕਵਣਿ ਸਿ ਰੁਤੀ ਮਾਹੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਹੋਆ ਆਕਾਰੁ॥
kavaṇ si rutī māh kavaṇ jit hoā ākār ||
What season, what month was it, when creation was formed?

ਵੇਲ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ਪੰਡਤੀ ਜਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲੇਖੁ ਪੁਰਾਣੁ॥
vel na pāīā paṇḍatī ji hovai lekh purāṇ ||
The time is not known to the scholars, though it may be written in the Purāṇas.

ਵਖਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਕਾਦੀਆ ਜਿ ਲਿਖਨਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਕੁਰਾਣੁ॥
vakhat na pāio kādīā ji likhan lekh kurāṇ ||
Nor is the moment found by the qāzīs, though they write in the Qurān.

ਥਿਤਿ ਵਾਰੁ ਨਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਰੁਤਿ ਮਾਹੁ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ॥
thit vār nā jogī jāṇai rut māh nā koī ||
No yogī knows the lunar date, the day, the season, or the month.

ਜਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਿਰਠੀ ਕਉ ਸਾਜੇ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ॥
jā kartā siraṭhī kau sāje āpe jāṇai soi ||
Only the Creator who fashioned this creation knows.

ਕਿਵ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਾ ਕਿਵ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਕਿਉ ਵਰਨੀ ਕਿਵ ਜਾਣਾ॥
kiv kar ākhā kiv sālāhī kiu varṇī kiv jāṇā ||
How can I speak of Him? How can I praise Him? How can I describe Him? How can I know Him?

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਣਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਇਕ ਦੂ ਇਕੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ॥
nānak ākhaṇ sabh ko ākhai ik dū ik siāṇā ||
O Nānak, everyone speaks, each one claiming to be wise.

ਵਡਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਵਡੀ ਨਾਈ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਹੋਵੈ॥
vaḍā sāhib vaḍī nāī kītā jā kā hovai ||
Great is the Master, great is His Name; great is His creation.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਆਪੌ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਗੈ ਗਇਆ ਨ ਸੋਹੈ॥ ੨੧॥
nānak je ko āpau jāṇai agai gaïā na sohai ||21||
O Nānak, whoever thinks they know it all will not be honored in the Divine court.


ਪਉੜੀ ੨੨ (Paurī 22)

ਪਾਤਾਲਾ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਲਖ ਆਗਾਸਾ ਆਗਾਸ॥
pātālā pātāl lakh āgāsā āgās ||
There are countless netherworlds, countless skies

ਓੜਕ ਓੜਕ ਭਾਲਿ ਥਕੇ ਵੇਦ ਕਹਨਿ ਇਕ ਵਾਤ॥
oṛak oṛak bhāl thake ved kahan ik vāt ||
Searching and searching, the Vedas grew weary; they could only say one thing.

ਸਹਸ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਕਹਨਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਅਸੁਲੂ ਇਕੁ ਧਾਤੁ॥
sahas aṭhārah kahan katebā asulū ik dhāt ||
The scriptures say there are eighteen thousand worlds; but their essence is one.

ਲੇਖਾ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਲੇਖੈ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ॥
lekhā hoi ta likhīai lekhai hoi viṇās ||
If it could be accounted for, it would be written; but trying to measure it, calculation itself breaks down.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪੁ॥ ੨੨॥
nānak vaḍā ākhīai āpe jāṇai āp ||22||
So, O Nānak, simply say: He is great. Only He Himself knows His own vastness.


ਪਉੜੀ ੨੩ (Paurī 23)

ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਏਤੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ॥
sālāhī sālāh etī surat na pāīā ||
In praising and glorifying, even through endless praises, His limit cannot be realized.

ਨਦੀਆ ਅਤੈ ਵਾਹ ਪਵਹਿ ਸਮੁੰਦਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ॥
nadīā atai vāh pavah samund na jāṇīah ||
Just as countless rivers and streams merge into the ocean, yet the ocean’s vastness cannot be known,

ਸਮੁੰਦ ਸਾਹ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਗਿਰਹਾ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਾਲੁ ਧਨੁ॥
samund sāh sultān girahā setī māl dhan ||
A king as great as the ocean, possessing mountains of wealth and treasures,

ਕੀੜੀ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਨੀ ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰਹਿ॥ ੨੩॥
kīṛī tul na hovnī je tis manahu na vīsrah ||23||
Is not equal even to a tiny ant, if that ant never forgets Him in its heart.


ਪਉੜੀ ੨੪ (Paurī 24)

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਅੰਤੁ॥
antu na siftī kahaṇ na ant ||
There is no end to His praises, nor to speaking of them.

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਕਰਣੈ ਦੇਣਿ ਨ ਅੰਤੁ॥
antu na karaṇai deṇ na ant ||
There is no end to His deeds, nor to His gifts.

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਵੇਖਣਿ ਸੁਣਣਿ ਨ ਅੰਤੁ॥
antu na vekhaṇ suṇaṇ na ant ||
There is no end to seeing Him, nor to hearing of Him.

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਕਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਮੰਤੁ॥
antu na jāpai kiā man mant ||
There is no end to knowing what is in His mind.

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਕੀਤਾ ਆਕਾਰੁ॥
antu na jāpai kītā ākār ||
There is no end to the forms He has created.

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ॥
antu na jāpai pārāvār ||
There is no end to His limits, His near or far boundary.

ਅੰਤ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਬਿਲਲਾਹਿ॥
ant kāraṇ kete billāh ||
Many have cried out in yearning to reach His end.

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਤ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਹਿ॥
tā ke ant na pāe jāh ||
But no one has ever found His end.

ਏਹੁ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ॥
ehu ant na jāṇai koi ||
No one knows His true limits.

ਬਹੁਤਾ ਕਹੀਐ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਹੋਇ॥
bahutā kahīai bahutā hoi ||
The more we speak of Him, the greater He becomes.

ਵਡਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਊਚਾ ਥਾਉ॥
vaḍā sāhib ūcā thāu ||
Great is the Master, lofty is His throne.

ਊਚੇ ਉਪਰਿ ਊਚਾ ਨਾਉ॥
ūce upar ūcā nāu ||
Higher than the highest is His Name.

ਏਵਡੁ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਕੋਇ॥
evaḍ ūcā hovai koi ||
If anyone could be as great as He,

ਤਿਸੁ ਊਚੇ ਕਉ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਇ॥
tis ūce kau jāṇai soi ||
Only then could that one know Him.

ਜੇਵਡੁ ਆਪਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਿ ਆਪਿ॥
jevḍ āp jāṇai āp āp ||
Only He Himself knows His own greatness.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੀ ਦਾਤਿ॥ ੨੪॥
nānak nadarī karmī dāt ||24||
O Nānak, by His glance of grace alone are His gifts received.


ਪਉੜੀ ੨੫ (Paurī 25)

ਬਹੁਤਾ ਕਰਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾ ਜਾਇ॥
bahutā karam likhiā nā jāi ||
God’s grace is so abundant it cannot be recorded.

ਵਡਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਇ॥
vaḍā dātā til na tamāi ||
The Great Giver bestows without even a trace of desire or expectation.

ਕੇਤੇ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਜੋਧ ਅਪਾਰ॥
kete maṅgah jodh apār ||
Countless warriors and champions beg at His door.

ਕੇਤਿਆ ਗਣਤ ਨਹੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
ketiā gaṇat nahī vīcār ||
So many ask that they cannot be counted or even conceived.

ਕੇਤੇ ਖਪਿ ਤੁਟਹਿ ਵੇਕਾਰ॥
kete khap ṭuṭah vekār ||
Countless are ruined and destroyed by their vices.

ਕੇਤੇ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਮੁਕਰੁ ਪਾਹਿ॥
kete lai lai mukar pāh ||
Countless receive and then deny the One who gave.

ਕੇਤੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਖਾਹੀ ਖਾਹਿ॥
kete mūrakh khāhī khāh ||
Countless fools keep consuming endlessly.

ਕੇਤਿਆ ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਸਦ ਮਾਰ॥
ketiā dūkh bhūkh sad mār ||
Countless suffer constant pain, hunger, and affliction.

ਏਹਿ ਭਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਤਾਰ॥
eh bhi dāt terī dātār ||
Even these are gifts from You, O Giver.

ਬੰਦਿ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੋਇ॥
band khalāsī bhāṇai hoi ||
Bondage and liberation both happen according to Your Will.

ਹੋਰੁ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ॥
hor ākh na sakai koi ||
No one else can declare otherwise.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਖਾਇਕੁ ਆਖਣਿ ਪਾਇ॥
je ko khāik ākhaṇ pāi ||
If some fool dares to say otherwise,

ਓਹੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੇਤੀਆ ਮੁਹਿ ਖਾਇ॥
ohu jāṇai jetīā muh khāi ||
He will realize it only when he faces the blows upon his face.

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ॥
āpe jāṇai āpe deī ||
He Himself knows and He Himself gives.

ਆਖਹਿ ਸਿ ਭਿ ਕੇਈ ਕੇਇ॥
ākheh si bhi keī kei ||
Many speak of Him in countless ways.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ॥
jis no bakhse sift sālāh ||
Whoever He blesses with praise and devotion,

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ॥ ੨੫॥
nānak pātisāhī pātisāh ||25||
O Nānak, that person becomes the King of kings.


ਪਉੜੀ ੨੬ (Paurī 26)

ਅਮੁਲ ਗੁਣ ਅਮੁਲ ਵਾਪਾਰ॥
amul guṇ amul vāpār ||
God’s virtues are beyond price; they cannot be measured or bought.

ਅਮੁਲ ਵਾਪਾਰੀਏ ਅਮੁਲ ਭੰਡਾਰ॥
amul vāpārīe amul bhaṇḍār ||
Those saints who trade in these virtues, and the vast treasures of divine qualities—they too are priceless.

ਅਮੁਲ ਆਵਹਿ ਅਮੁਲ ਲੈ ਜਾਹਿ॥
amul āvah amul lai jāh ||
Their coming into the world is priceless, and their departure too is invaluable, for they bring divine treasures.

ਅਮੁਲ ਭਾਇ ਅਮੁਲਾ ਸਮਾਹਿ॥
amul bhāe amulā samāh ||
Their love for the Divine is beyond price, and their merging into Him is equally beyond price.

ਅਮੁਲੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ॥
amul dharam amul dībāṇ ||
The law of righteousness and the court of the Divine are without measure, beyond estimation.

ਅਮੁਲੁ ਤੁਲੁ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ॥
amul tul amul parvāṇ ||
The scales by which deeds are weighed, and the acceptance of actions, are also priceless.

ਅਮੁਲੁ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ॥
amul bakhasīs amul nīsāṇ ||
His gifts and His signs of grace are beyond value.

ਅਮੁਲੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਣੁ॥
amul karam amul phurmāṇ ||
His mercy, His decree, and His command are beyond all reckoning.

ਅਮੁਲੋ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਆਖਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ॥
amulo amul ākhiā na jāi ||
His greatness is so boundless that even to call Him “priceless” is difficult.

ਆਖਿ ਆਖਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ॥
ākh ākh rahe liv lāi ||
Those who try to speak of Him, end up absorbed in Him and fall silent.

ਆਖਹਿ ਵੇਦ ਪਾਠ ਪੁਰਾਣ॥
ākheh ved pāṭh purāṇ ||
The Vedas and the Purāṇas speak of Him.

ਆਖਹਿ ਪੜੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਖਿਆਣ॥
ākheh paṛe karah vakhiaṇ ||
The learned and philosophers read and interpret, declaring Him beyond measure.

ਆਖਹਿ ਬਰਮੇ ਆਖਹਿ ਇੰਦ॥
ākheh barme ākheh ind ||
Brahmā and Indra too proclaim Him as priceless.

ਆਖਹਿ ਗੋਪੀ ਤੈ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ॥
ākheh gopī tai govind ||
The Gopīs and Krishna themselves declare Him beyond value.

ਆਖਹਿ ਈਸਰ ਆਖਹਿ ਸਿਧ॥
ākheh īsar ākheh sidh ||
Shiva and the Siddhas, immersed in yogic practice, also speak of His greatness.

ਆਖਹਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਬੁਧ॥
ākheh kete kīte budh ||
Many enlightened beings and Buddhas made by Him say He is beyond estimation.

ਆਖਹਿ ਦਾਨਵ ਆਖਹਿ ਦੇਵ॥
ākheh dānav ākheh dev ||
Both demons and gods admit His value cannot be assessed.

ਆਖਹਿ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਸੇਵ॥
ākheh sur nar mun jan sev ||
Divine beings, humans, sages, and servants—all proclaim Him as priceless.

ਕੇਤੇ ਆਖਹਿ ਆਖਣਿ ਪਾਹਿ॥
kete ākheh ākhaṇ pāh ||
Countless others continue to speak of Him and attempt to describe Him.

ਕੇਤੇ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਉਠਿ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਹਿ॥
kete kahi kahi uṭh uṭh jāh ||
Many speak of Him all their lives, yet depart unable to express His worth.

ਏਤੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਕਰੇਹਿ॥
ete kīte hor kareh ||
Even if countless more beings were created,

ਤਾ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਸਕਹਿ ਕੇਈ ਕੇਇ॥
tā ākh na sakah keī kei ||
none would be able to define His value.

ਜੇਵਡੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੇਵਡੁ ਹੋਇ॥
jevḍ bhāvai tevḍ hoi ||
As great as He wills, so He becomes.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ॥
nānak jāṇai sācā soi ||
O Nānak, only the True One Himself knows His own vastness.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਬੋਲੁਵਿਗਾੜੁ॥
je ko ākhai bolvigāṛ ||
If anyone claims otherwise, saying “I know His measure”,

ਤਾ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਸਿਰਿ ਗਾਵਾਰਾ ਗਾਵਾਰੁ॥ ੨੬॥
tā likhīai sir gāvārā gāvār ||26||
that person is not merely ignorant but the leader of the ignorant.


ਪਉੜੀ ੨੭ (Paurī 27)

ਸੋ ਦਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਸੋ ਘਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਬਹਿ ਸਰਬ ਸਮਾਲੇ॥
so dar kehā so ghar kehā jit bah sarab samāle ||
O Akāl Purakh, what is that Door, what is that House, from where You sit and sustain the entire universe?

ਵਾਜੇ ਨਾਦ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਸੰਖਾ ਕੇਤੇ ਵਾਵਣਹਾਰੇ॥
vāje nād anek asaṅkhā kete vāvaṇhāre ||
At that Door, countless musical instruments play, and countless musicians bring forth their sounds

ਕੇਤੇ ਰਾਗ ਪਰੀ ਸਿਉ ਕਹੀਅਨਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਗਾਵਣਹਾਰੇ॥
kete rāg parī siu kahīan kete gāvaṇhāre ||
Countless are the rāgas with their families, and countless are those who sing them.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਹਨੋ ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਦੁਆਰੇ॥
gāvah tuhaṇo pauṇ pāṇī baisantar gāvai rājā dharam duāre ||
The wind sings to You, the water sings to You, the fire sings to You, and Dharamrāj sings Your praises at the gate of justice.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਲਿਖਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ॥
gāvah cit gupat likh jāṇah likh likh dharam vīcāre ||
The recording angels, who write the unseen deeds, sing to You, and Dharamrāj considers those records.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਈਸਰੁ ਬਰਮਾ ਦੇਵੀ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਵਾਰੇ॥
gāvah īsar barmā devī sohan sadā savāre ||
Shiva sings to You, Brahmā sings to You, the goddesses — ever adorned — all sing to You.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਇੰਦ ਇਦਾਸਣਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਦਰਿ ਨਾਲੇ॥
gāvah ind idāsaṇ baiṭhe devatiā dar nāle ||
Indra, enthroned, and the gods at his court sing to You.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਿਧ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਸਾਧ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ॥
gāvah sidh samādhī andar gāvan sādh vīcāre ||
The Siddhas sing in deep samādhi, and the saints sing through contemplation.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਵੀਰ ਕਰਾਰੇ॥
gāvan jatī satī santokhī gāvah vīr karāre ||
The disciplined, the charitable, the contented, and the brave sing to You.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਨਿ ਰਖੀਸਰ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਵੇਦਾ ਨਾਲੇ॥
gāvan paṇḍit paṛan rakhīsar jug jug vedā nāle ||
The scholars and sages, with the Vedas on their lips for ages upon ages, sing to You.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਮੋਹਣੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਨਿ ਸੁਰਗਾ ਮਛ ਪਇਆਲੇ॥
gāvah mohaṇīā man mohan surgā machh païāle ||
The enchanting beauties, who captivate the mind in heavens, earth, and the underworld, sing to You.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਰਤਨ ਉਪਾਏ ਤੇਰੇ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਲੇ॥
gāvan ratan upāe tere aṭhasaṭh tīrath nāle ||
The precious jewels You created, and the sixty-eight holy places of pilgrimage, all sing to You.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜੋਧ ਮਹਾਬਲ ਸੂਰਾ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਖਾਣੀ ਚਾਰੇ॥
gāvah jodh mahābal sūrā gāvah khāṇī cāre ||
The warriors, mighty heroes, and the beings of the four sources of life sing to You.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਖੰਡ ਮੰਡਲ ਵਰਭੰਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਖੇ ਧਾਰੇ॥
gāvah khaṇḍ maṇḍal varbhaṇḍā kar kar rakhe dhāre ||
The planets, solar systems, and galaxies — created and sustained by You — all sing to You.

ਸੇਈ ਤੁਧੁਨੋ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਨਿ ਰਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਗਤ ਰਸਾਲੇ॥
seī tuḍhuno gāvah jo tuḍh bhāvan rate tere bhagat rasāle ||
Yet truly, only those sing to You whom You accept — Your devotees, drenched in the nectar of Your Name.

ਹੋਰਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਮੈ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਨਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਿਆ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ॥
hor kete gāvan se mai cit na āvan nānaku kiā vīcāre ||
There are so many more who sing to You, O Lord, but they do not even come to my mind. What can Nanak possibly say?

ਸੋਈ ਸੋਈ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਚੀ ਨਾਈ॥
soī soī sadā sac sāhib sācā sācī nāī ||
That Lord alone is forever True, His Name is the truest of truths.

ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਸੀ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਜਾਸੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਾਈ॥
hai bhī hosī jāi na jāsī racnā jin racāī ||
He exists now, He shall always exist, never coming nor going, the One who created this creation.

ਰੰਗੀ ਰੰਗੀ ਭਾਤੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਈ॥
raṅgī raṅgī bhātī kar kar jinsī māiā jin upāī ||
In countless colors, countless forms, He fashioned the world through His creative power.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਕੀਤਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਿਵ ਤਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ॥
kar kar vekhai kītā āpaṇā jiv tis dī vaḍiāī ||
Having created, He watches over all, as pleases His greatness

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਸੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਈ॥
jo tis bhāvai soī karsī hukam na karaṇā jāī ||
What pleases Him, that alone He does; none can command Him otherwise.

ਸੋ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਸਾਹਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਹਣੁ ਰਜਾਈ॥ ੨੭॥
so pātisāhu sāhā pātisāhib nānak rahaṇ rajāī ||27||
He is the King of kings, the Supreme Sovereign. Nanak says: to remain in His Will is the only way.


ਪਉੜੀ ੨੮ (Paurī 28)

ਮੁੰਦਾ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਰਮੁ ਪਤੁ ਝੋਲੀ ਧਿਆਨ ਕੀ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਿਭੂਤਿ॥
mundā santokh saram pat jholī dhiān kī karah bibhūt ||
Let contentment be your earrings, modesty your begging bowl, and let meditation be the sacred ashes you apply.

ਖਿੰਥਾ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੁਆਰੀ ਕਾਇਆ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਡੰਡਾ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ॥
khinthā kāl kuārī kāiā jugat daṇḍā pratīt ||
Let the patched coat be the awareness of death, let the body remain pure as a virgin, and let faith be your staff.

ਆਈ ਪੰਥੀ ਸਗਲ ਜਮਾਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਜੀਤੈ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤੁ॥
āī panthī sagal jamātī man jītai jag jīt ||
Consider your path to be the path of all humanity; conquer the mind, and you conquer the world.

ਆਦੇਸੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਆਦੇਸੁ॥
ādes tisai ādes ||
Salutations to that One, salutations.

ਆਦਿ ਅਨੀਲੁ ਅਨਾਦਿ ਅਨਾਹਤਿ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਸੁ॥ ੨੮॥
ād anīl anād anāhat jug jug eko ves ||28||
He is primal, stainless, without beginning, indestructible, and in every age, He remains ever the same.


ਪਉੜੀ ੨੯ (Paurī 29)

ਭੁਗਤਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦਇਆ ਭੰਡਾਰਣਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਨਾਦ॥
bhugat giān daiā bhaṇḍāraṇ ghaṭ ghaṭ vājah nād ||
The true food is knowledge, compassion is the distributor, and within every heart resounds the Divine melody.

ਆਪਿ ਨਾਥੁ ਨਾਥੀ ਸਭ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਅਵਰਾ ਸਾਦ॥
āp nāth nāthī sabh jā kī ridh sidh avarā sād ||
He Himself is the Master of all; all are bound to Him. Spiritual powers and miraculous abilities are mere other tastes, not the true essence.

ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਦੁਇ ਕਾਰ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ਲੇਖੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਭਾਗ॥
sanjog vijog dui kār calāvah lekhe āvah bhāg ||
Union and separation are both orchestrated by Him; according to the written destiny, each receives one’s share.

ਆਦੇਸੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਆਦੇਸੁ॥
ādes tisai ādes ||
Salutations, obeisance, to That One.

ਆਦਿ ਅਨੀਲੁ ਅਨਾਦਿ ਅਨਾਹਤਿ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਸੁ॥ ੨੯॥
ād anīl anād anāhat jug jug eko ves ||29||
The One who is primal, stainless, without origin, beyond destruction, and through all ages remains ever the same—unto Him is my bowing.


ਪਉੜੀ ੩੦ (Paurī 30)

ਏਕਾ ਮਾਈ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਵਿਆਈ ਤਿਨਿ ਚੇਲੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ॥
ekā māī jugat viāī tin cele parvāṇ ||
The One primal mother, united through Divine method, gave rise to three accepted disciples.

ਇਕੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਇਕੁ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ ਇਕੁ ਲਾਏ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ॥
ik saṅsārī ik bhaṇḍārī ik lāe dībāṇ ||
One is the creator of the world, one the sustainer, and one the judge who brings dissolution.

ਜਿਵ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵੈ ਜਿਵ ਹੋਵੈ ਫੁਰਮਾਣੁ॥
jiv tis bhāvai tivai calāvai jiv hovai phurmāṇ ||
As it pleases Him, so He directs; as His command is, so it happens.

ਓਹੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਓਨਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਏਹੁ ਵਿਡਾਣੁ॥
ohu vekhai onā nadar na āvai bahutā ehu viḍāṇ ||
He sees all, yet they cannot see Him—this is the greatest wonder.

ਆਦੇਸੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਆਦੇਸੁ॥
ādes tisai ādes ||
Salutations, salutations to That One.

ਆਦਿ ਅਨੀਲੁ ਅਨਾਦਿ ਅਨਾਹਤਿ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਸੁ॥ ੩੦॥
ād anīl anād anāhat jug jug eko ves ||30||
The One who is primal, stainless, without origin, beyond destruction, and ever the same through all ages—unto Him I bow.


ਪਉੜੀ ੩੧ (Paurī 31)

ਆਸਣੁ ਲੋਇ ਲੋਇ ਭੰਡਾਰ॥
āsaṇ loe loe bhaṇḍār ||
In every realm and world is His throne, and in every realm are His treasure-stores.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੁ ਏਕਾ ਵਾਰ॥
jo kichh pāiā su ekā vār ||
Whatever He placed in them, He placed all at once, in the beginning.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ॥
kar kar vekhai sirjaṇhār ||
The Creator fashions again and again, and continually beholds His creation.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਕਾਰ॥
nānak sache kī sācī kār ||
O Nanak, the True One’s work is true and perfect.

ਆਦੇਸੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਆਦੇਸੁ॥
ādes tisai ādes ||
Salutations, salutations to That One.

ਆਦਿ ਅਨੀਲੁ ਅਨਾਦਿ ਅਨਾਹਤਿ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਸੁ॥ ੩੧॥
ād anīl anād anāhat jug jug eko ves ||31||
Primal, stainless, without origin, beyond destruction, and through all ages ever the same is His form.


ਪਉੜੀ ੩੨ (Paurī 32)

ਇਕ ਦੂ ਜੀਭੌ ਲਖ ਹੋਹਿ ਲਖ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਲਖ ਵੀਸ॥
ik dū jībhau lakh hohi lakh hovah lakh vīs ||
If one tongue became a hundred thousand, and then became twenty hundred thousand,

ਲਖੁ ਲਖੁ ਗੇੜਾ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ॥
lakh lakh geṛā ākhiīah ek nām jagdīs ||
And with each of those tongues, hundreds of thousands of times, one were to chant the Name of the Lord of the Universe,

ਏਤੁ ਰਾਹਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਵੜੀਆ ਚੜੀਐ ਹੋਇ ਇਕੀਸ॥
et rāh pat pavaṛīā caṛīai hoi ikīs ||
By this path, on these steps of honor, one climbs and becomes united with the One Lord.

ਸੁਣਿ ਗਲਾ ਆਕਾਸ ਕੀ ਕੀਟਾ ਆਈ ਰੀਸ॥
suṇ galā ākās kī kīṭā āī rīs ||
Hearing the praises of those who ascend to the heavens, even the lowly insects become envious.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਕੂੜੀ ਕੂੜੈ ਠੀਸ॥ ੩੨॥
nānak nadarī pāīai kūṛī kūṛai ṭhīs ||32||
O Nanak, it is only by His Glance of Grace that He is obtained; all false boasts are worthless.


ਪਉੜੀ ੩੩ (Paurī 33)

ਆਖਣਿ ਜੋਰੁ ਚੁਪੈ ਨਹ ਜੋਰੁ॥
ākhaṇ jor cupai nah jor ||
There is no power in speaking, nor is there power in remaining silent.

ਜੋਰੁ ਨ ਮੰਗਣਿ ਦੇਣਿ ਨ ਜੋਰੁ॥
jor na maṅgaṇ deṇ na jor ||
There is no power in begging, nor is there power in giving.

ਜੋਰੁ ਨ ਜੀਵਣਿ ਮਰਣਿ ਨਹ ਜੋਰੁ॥
jor na jīvaṇ maraṇ nah jor ||
There is no power in living, nor is there power in dying.

ਜੋਰੁ ਨ ਰਾਜਿ ਮਾਲਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਰੁ॥
jor na rāj māl man sor ||
There is no power in ruling, nor in wealth, nor in the uproar of the mind.

ਜੋਰੁ ਨ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ॥
jor na surtī giān vīcār ||
There is no power in concentration, nor in wisdom, nor in contemplation.

ਜੋਰੁ ਨ ਜੁਗਤੀ ਛੁਟੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ॥
jor na jugtī chuṭai sansār ||
There is no power in any method to free oneself from the world.

ਜਿਸੁ ਹਥਿ ਜੋਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਸੋਇ॥
jisu hath jor kar vekhai soi ||
The One in whose Hands lies all power, He alone exercises it.

ਨਾਨਕ ਉਤਮੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ॥ ੩੩॥
nānak utam nīc na koi ||33||
O Nanak, none is high or low.


ਪਉੜੀ ੩੪ (Paurī 34)

ਰਾਤੀ ਰੁਤੀ ਥਿਤੀ ਵਾਰ॥
rātī rutī thitī vār ||
Nights, seasons, lunar dates, and days of the week.

ਪਵਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਾਤਾਲ॥
pavaṇ pāṇī aganī pātāl ||
Air, water, fire, and the nether regions.

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਥਾਪਿ ਰਖੀ ਧਰਮ ਸਾਲ॥
tis vic dharatī thāp rakhī dharam sāl ||
In their midst, He placed the earth as a place for righteous living.

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੀਅ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕੇ ਰੰਗ॥
tis vic jīa jugat ke raṅg ||
Within it, creatures of many kinds and ways of life.

ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਨੰਤ॥
tin ke nām anek anant ||
Their names and forms are countless and endless.

ਕਰਮੀ ਕਰਮੀ ਹੋਇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
karmī karmī hoi vīcār ||
By their deeds, their actions are judged.

ਸਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਸਚਾ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ॥
sacā āp sacā darabār ||
The True One Himself, His Court is True.

ਤਿਥੈ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਪੰਚ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ॥
tithai sohan pañc parvāṇ ||
There, the accepted ones, the perfect beings, shine in glory.

ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਵੈ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ॥
nadrī karam pavai nīsāṇ ||
By His Grace, they bear the mark of acceptance.

ਕਚ ਪਕਾਈ ਓਥੈ ਪਾਇ॥
kac pakāī othai pāi ||
There, it is determined who is unripe and who is ripe.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗਇਆ ਜਾਪੈ ਜਾਇ॥ ੩੪॥
nānak gahiā jāpai jāi ||34||
O Nanak, when one departs, then one comes to know.


ਪਉੜੀ ੩੫ (Paurī 35)

ਧਰਮ ਖੰਡ ਕਾ ਏਹੋ ਧਰਮੁ॥
dharam khaṇḍ kā eho dharam ||
This is the law of Dharam Khand.

ਗਿਆਨ ਖੰਡ ਕਾ ਆਖਹੁ ਕਰਮੁ॥
giān khaṇḍ kā ākhu karam ||
Now, speak of the working of Giān Khand.

ਕੇਤੇ ਪਵਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਵੈਸੰਤਰ ਕੇਤੇ ਕਾਨ ਮਹੇਸ॥
kete pavaṇ pāṇī vaisaṅtar kete kān mahes ||
Countless are the winds, waters, fires; countless are Krishnas and Shivas.

ਕੇਤੇ ਬਰਮੇ ਘਾੜਤਿ ਘੜੀਅਹਿ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ ਕੇ ਵੇਸ॥
kete barme ghāṛat ghaṛīah rūp raṅg ke ves ||
Countless are the Brahmas shaping and forming forms, colors, and garbs.

ਕੇਤੀਆ ਕਰਮ ਭੂਮੀ ਮੇਰ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਧੂ ਉਪਦੇਸ॥
ketīā karam bhūmī mer kete kete dhū updes ||
Countless are the worlds of action, countless the mountains, countless the sages giving teachings.

ਕੇਤੇ ਇੰਦ ਚੰਦ ਸੂਰ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਮੰਡਲ ਦੇਸ॥
kete ind cand sūr kete kete maṇḍal des ||
Countless are Indras, moons, and suns; countless are the constellations and realms.

ਕੇਤੇ ਸਿਧ ਬੁਧ ਨਾਥ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਦੇਵੀ ਵੇਸ॥
kete sidh budh nāth kete kete devī ves ||
Countless are the siddhas, Buddhas, and masters; countless are the goddesses in their forms.

ਕੇਤੇ ਦੇਵ ਦਾਨਵ ਮੁਨਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਰਤਨ ਸਮੁੰਦ॥
kete dev dānav mun kete kete ratan samund ||
Countless are the gods, demons, and sages; countless are the jeweled oceans.

ਕੇਤੀਆ ਖਾਣੀ ਕੇਤੀਆ ਬਾਣੀ ਕੇਤੇ ਪਾਤ ਨਰਿੰਦ॥
ketīā khāṇī ketīā bāṇī kete pāt narind ||
Countless are the sources of life, countless the languages, countless the rulers and kings.

ਕੇਤੀਆ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੇਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਅੰਤੁ॥ ੩੫॥
ketīā surtī sevak kete nānak ant na ant ||35||
Countless are the seers and servants, O Nanak; there is no end, no limit.


ਪਉੜੀ ੩੬ (Paurī 36)

ਗਿਆਨ ਖੰਡ ਮਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਰਚੰਡੁ॥
giān khaṇḍ mahi giān parcaṇḍ ||
In the realm of knowledge, wisdom blazes brilliantly.

ਤਿਥੈ ਨਾਦ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਕੋਡ ਅਨੰਦੁ॥
tithai nād binod koḍ anand ||
There resound countless melodies, delights, and infinite joys.

ਸਰਮ ਖੰਡ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਰੂਪੁ॥
saram khaṇḍ kī bāṇī rūp ||
The realm of effort is described as the realm of beauty.

ਤਿਥੈ ਘਾੜਤਿ ਘੜੀਐ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ॥
tithai ghāṛat ghaṛīai bahut anūp ||
There, wondrous forms and incomparable designs are shaped.

ਤਾ ਕੀਆ ਗਲਾ ਕਥੀਆ ਨਾ ਜਾਹਿ॥
tā kīā galā kathīā nā jāhi ||
The details of this realm cannot be fully described.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ॥
je ko kahai pichai pachuṭāi ||
If anyone attempts to explain, they regret, for words fall short.

ਤਿਥੈ ਘੜੀਐ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਬੁਧਿ॥
tithai ghaṛīai surat mat man budh ||
There, consciousness, intellect, mind, and understanding are refined.

ਤਿਥੈ ਘੜੀਐ ਸੁਰਾ ਸਿਧਾ ਕੀ ਸੁਧਿ॥ ੩੬॥
tithai ghaṛīai surā sidhā kī sudh ||36||
There, the wisdom of gods and the insights of the perfected beings are fashioned.


ਪਉੜੀ ੩੭ (Paurī 37)

ਕਰਮ ਖੰਡ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਜੋਰੁ॥
karam khaṇḍ kī bāṇī jor ||
The speech of the Realm of Grace is filled with power.

ਤਿਥੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰੁ॥
tithai hor na koī hor ||
There, no “other” remains—only the Divine pervades.

ਤਿਥੈ ਜੋਧ ਮਹਾਬਲ ਸੂਰ॥
tithai jodh mahābal sūr ||
There dwell mighty warriors and great spiritual heroes.

ਤਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰ॥
tin mahi rām rahiā bharpūr ||
Within them, the Lord abides fully, filling every pore.

ਤਿਥੈ ਸੀਤੋ ਸੀਤਾ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਮਾਹਿ॥
tithai sīto sītā mahimā māhi ||
There, they are woven into the Divine glory itself.

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਰੂਪ ਨ ਕਥਨੇ ਜਾਹਿ॥
tā ke rūp na kathane jāhi ||
Their forms and splendor cannot be described in words.

ਨਾ ਓਹਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਨ ਠਾਗੇ ਜਾਹਿ॥
nā oh marah na ṭhāge jāhi ||
They do not die, nor can they ever be deceived.

ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ॥
jin kai rām vasai man māhi ||
For those in whose hearts the Lord resides.

ਤਿਥੈ ਭਗਤ ਵਸਹਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਅ॥
tithai bhagat vasah ke lo ||
In that realm dwell devotees from countless worlds.

ਕਰਹਿ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਸਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ॥
karah anand sacā man soi ||
They live in bliss, with the True One enshrined in their minds.

ਸਚ ਖੰਡਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ॥
sac khaṇḍ vasai niraṅkār ||
In the Realm of Truth abides the Formless Lord.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲ॥
kar kar vekhai nadar nihāl ||
He creates, and with His gracious glance, He sustains and blesses all.

ਤਿਥੈ ਖੰਡ ਮੰਡਲ ਵਰਭੰਡ॥
tithai khaṇḍ maṇḍal varbhaṇḍ ||
There are countless realms, regions, and universes.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਥੈ ਤ ਅੰਤ ਨ ਅੰਤ॥
je ko kathai ta ant na ant ||
If someone tries to describe them, there is no end, no limit.

ਤਿਥੈ ਲੋਅ ਲੋਅ ਆਕਾਰ॥
tithai loe loe ākār ||
There are countless forms and shapes of existence.

ਜਿਵ ਜਿਵ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਤਿਵੈ ਤਿਵ ਕਾਰ॥
jiv jiv hukam tivai tiv kār ||
As the Divine Hukam (command) is, so is the functioning of creation.

ਵੇਖੈ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਕਰਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ॥
vekhaī vigasai kar vīcār ||
Beholding creation and reflecting upon it, He rejoices in delight.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਥਨਾ ਕਰੜਾ ਸਾਰੁ॥ ੩੭॥
nānak kathnā karaṛā sār ||37||
O Nanak, to describe this state is as hard as chewing iron—it is beyond words.


ਪਉੜੀ ੩੮ (Paurī 38)

ਜਤੁ ਪਾਹਾਰਾ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਸੁਨਿਆਰੁ॥
jatu pāhārā dhīraj suniār ||
Let self-discipline be the anvil, and patience the goldsmith.

ਅਹਰਣਿ ਮਤਿ ਵੇਦੁ ਹਥੀਆਰੁ॥
ahraṇ mat ved hathīār ||
Let the intellect be the anvil, and knowledge the hammer.

ਭਉ ਖਲਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਤਪ ਤਾਉ॥
bhau khalā agan tap tāu ||
Let reverence for God be the bellows, and spiritual discipline the fire.

ਭਾਂਡਾ ਭਾਉ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਢਾਲਿ॥
bhāṇḍā bhāu amrit tit ṭhāl ||
Let love be the vessel, into which the nectar is poured.

ਘੜੀਐ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੀ ਟਕਸਾਲ॥
ghaṛīai sabad sacī ṭaksāl ||
In the mint of the True Word, the mind is shaped and refined.

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਾਰ॥
jin kau nadar karam tin kār ||
Those upon whom the Lord casts His glance of grace undertake this work.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲ॥ ੩੮॥
nānak nadarī nadar nihāl ||38||
O Nanak, by His gracious glance, they are blessed and exalted.


ਸਲੋਕੁ (Slok)

ਪਵਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਧਰਤਿ ਮਹਤੁ॥
pavaṇ gurū pāṇī pitā mātā dharat mahat ||
Air is the Guru, water the father, and great earth the mother.

ਦਿਵਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਦਾਈ ਦਾਇਆ ਖੇਲੈ ਸਗਲ ਜਗਤੁ॥
divas rāt dui dāī dāiā khelai sagal jagat ||
Day and night are the two nurses, under whose care the whole world plays.

ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆ ਵਾਚੈ ਧਰਮੁ ਹਦੂਰਿ॥
caṅgiāīā buriāīā vācai dharam hadūr ||
Good deeds and bad deeds are read out in the presence of Dharma, the Judge.

ਕਰਮੀ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਕੇ ਦੂਰਿ॥
karmī āpo āpaṇī ke neṛai ke dūr ||
According to their deeds, some draw near to God, and some remain far away.

ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਗਏ ਮਸਕਤਿ ਘਾਲਿ॥
jinī nām dhiāiā gae maskat ghāl ||
Those who have meditated upon the Divine Name and labored in devotion,

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਕੇਤੀ ਛੁਟੀ ਨਾਲਿ॥ ੧॥
nānak te mukh ujlē ketī chuṭī nāl ||1||
O Nanak, their faces shine radiant, and countless others are liberated along with them.
